In The 2002 Film Catch Me If You Can, We Follow Frank...

In the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can, we follow Frank Abagnale through the highs and lows of his life. At a young age Frank engages in check fraud after running away from his soon to be divorced parents, accumulating millions of dollars before he is even nineteen years old. He impersonates a doctor, pilot, and prosecutor. Throughout each new identity, Frank experiences different social situations and run-ins with law enforcement. FBI Agent Carl Hanratty is especially restless in the pursuit of Frank Abagnale. They develope an interesting relationship as a law enforcer and criminal. After Frank’s consecutive escapes, FBI is able to capture him and hold him liable for his violations of the law. Frank Abagnale does not particularly fits all of the definition. Frank is a low class runaway teen, not a high status individual. On the other hand Frank does portray high status individuals when he partakes in fraudulent crime. Frank poses as a doctor, air pilot, and a prosecutor, which are highly praised at a social level. Retrospectively, Frank’s impersonations of high status individuals does include him in Sutherland’s definition of white collar crime. Frank perceived as a high status individual allows him to use the authority he emits and charm to carry out check fraud. Frank would chose young female tellers to use his good looks and charm to distract them from fraudulent checks. In the film, he is also shown using multiple techniques of falsifying checks. For example, Frank purchasing Pan Airline’s toy airplane to take the logo sticker off to falsify Pan Airlines salary checks. Frank even goes out of his way to attend an auction to purchases a specific ban k typewriter to improve his fraudulent activity. Committing white collar crime was an easy go to for Frank since he was a teen runaway with no completed education. He was able to live lavishly. Additionally, he attracted women with his good lucks and seemingly rich persona.
